Indiana Drupal Development and Design

As of 2008, I am designing all of my clients' pages in Drupal. Drupal is an open source content management system. "Open source" means that Drupal is the product of thousands of programmers working together and tens of thousands of hours of work, meaning that it is thoroughly tested, offers robust features, and is secure. It also means that it is freely available for use by organizations and companies around the world.

"Content management system" means that Drupal uses a database to organize and display web content. Drupal also includes a simple way to edit this content, enabling users with no background in web design to create content and edit existing pages-- without any danger of changing any of the critical underlying code.

Drupal differs from programs like Dreamweaver MX in two important ways. First, Drupal "lives" on the server, the computer that hosts your website. To edit a page in Drupal, you log into your own website with a special username and password, which allows you to make changes online from the comfort of your own computer. You don't need to install any software in order to use Drupal, and upgrades to Drupal are free. Compared to the cost of Dreamweaver (especially if you need several licenses), this can result in significant cost savings for your business.

Second, Drupal separates presentation from content. What this means is that you can edit your web site's text in a fairly natural way, and when you finish Drupal will make it look great and optimize it for the search engines automatically. Dreamweaver and other programs are "what you see is what you get"-- but with these programs, what you see is all you get.
